If you thought your tea might be soothing to injured or inflamed tissues, you would be correct. Its compounds have been studied and found to contain therapeutic flavonoids, allantoin, and ursolic acid, among others. Research has confirmed that plantain has anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, analgesic, antioxidant, and even antibiotic properties.

In tea form, plantain is used to soothe inflamed internal tissues, such as stomach ulcers and inflammatory bowel disorders. It is used as a diuretic and as an expectorant for coughs. It has been found to be high in calcium and vitamins A, C, and K. This lends credence to its use for treating scrapes and cuts, as vitamin K is necessary for clot formation.

One might be surprised to learn that the seeds from a cultivated form of plantain, called P. psyllium, are used as a bulk laxative in such commercial preparations as Metamucil. Needless to say, the seeds of the common plantain produce a similar effect.

The Science of Nature: Health Effects That Last!

Did you know that Dr. Qing Li, in Japan, has studied the effect of time spent in nature on our immune system’s natural killer (NK) cells? He has found that these NK cells, which fight off and kill unhealthy cells in the body such as tumor cells and those infected with viruses, actually increase in number and are more active after a forest bathing trip lasting three days and two nights. Specifically, he found that NK cell numbers rose by 50 percent and that their activity rose by 53 percent. Even more striking is the fact that this rise and activity of NK cells remained elevated for thirty days after a three-day forest bathing trip! (Li et al. 2008)
